Civic Integration Exam (Inburgeringsexamen) – Complete Guide

What is the Civic Integration Exam?

The Civic Integration Exam (Inburgeringsexamen) is a Dutch government requirement for many non-EU citizens who want to live permanently in the Netherlands. The goal is to ensure that newcomers can communicate in Dutch and understand basic Dutch society, laws, and work culture.

This exam is mandatory for certain immigration processes, including:

  • Family reunification (MVV visa)

  • Permanent residence

  • Dutch citizenship (naturalization)

Who Needs to Take the Exam?

You will likely need to take the exam if you are:

  • Applying for a family reunification visa (joining your Dutch partner/spouse)

  • A non-EU/EEA or non-Swiss citizen planning to stay long-term

  • A refugee or asylum holder

  • Seeking Dutch citizenship after 5 years of residence

Civic Integration Exam Abroad (for MVV Visa Applicants)

If you are applying from outside the Netherlands (e.g., for a partner visa), you must first pass the Basisexamen Inburgering Buitenland — a basic civic integration exam taken at the Dutch embassy or consulate in your country.
